You Know What Happens When the Cat is Away?

Exactly! Not only will the mice play and multiply but so will the rats and rabbits! In the Macquarie Islands, located half-way between Australia and the Antarctica, some Eco-conscious species decided they needed to remove all the feral (wild) cats from the island to save their 3.5 million sea-bird population. Now the rabbit population has over run the island and is eating all their vegetation which the sea-birds depended on for nesting and cover.

Aye but here is the rub mate! Writing in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Applied Ecology, Dana Bergstrom and her colleagues wrote, "Our study shows that between 2000 and 2007, there has been widespread ecosystem devastation and decades of conservation effort compromised." Why is that? Well the study concludes, "The unintended consequences of the cat-removal project show the dangers of meddling with an ecosystem — even with the best of intentions.

The Bible teaches us that God created us to be good stewards of His creation and to respect animal life. I am confident God will hold accountable those who do not (Proverbs 12:10; Genesis 2:15). However, I am equally convinced that man was created superior to all the animals (Genesis 1:26-28). Unfortunately, man does not always act with superior intelligence. Even so, those who worship and value the earth and beast more than they value God or their fellow man will always end up with "the unintended consequences" accruing to their own brute natures (Romans 1:18-32).
